TiGeR V gets its stripes!

I purchased a used 2015? Jackson “Randy Rhoads” RR1, “Made in USA” by the Jackson/Fender Custom Shop.

It came with a Metallic Black Poly finish, and had a few large dings on the top fin.

I decided to go ahead with making it look exactly like the Custom Shop Tiger painted RR V guitar that was featured in the Jackson / Charvel catalog from 1985, a guitar that I had always wanted from the days of placing my custom order Red and White Tiger Strip San Dimas Charvel/Jackson.

Sanding the Poly finish, 400 grit wet
Filled the mounting rings screw holes
Masked the stripes and painted the white
White undercoat for the color
Here is the initial Graffiti Yellow
The paper photo from the catalog
The fine sanding begins, 1000-4000 grit
Ready for clear coats
Clear coats and block sanding
Pickup mounting bar, bell brass
The catalog only showed the top view
I had freedom with the back stripes
No more mounting rings!

Overall, this project had a huge learning curve! Matching those stripes to the catalog photo was very time consuming. Also, I would go a different way re the masking, hand painting over the taping off. Simply, get the Graffiti Yellow solid THEN hand paint the stripes… massive clear coats then sand down leveling the two colors together. Maybe it would take one month instead of three!
